Before We Lock Ourselves In Chapels

Before they lock themselves in chapels
and sing about freedom,
ask us where we belong-
children die to swallow the crumbs of our bread.

Before we seal ourselves in surreality,
convinced of our own amity,
before we sneeze and call it calamity
and wipe our hands on the shirts of the
broken,

ask us this day why we dare to abide,
as fat and filled with self-assurance,
don't wake us from our lucid sleep!
If the world won't lift our own hands to our mouths,
we'll protest or weep,

Oh righteous farrow,
turn love into another cause,
turn grace into a fine-print clause,
sign on the dotted line,
Demand of us attention,

Or reciprocate to us instead a zirconium faith,
place the fate of our souls on our souls,
as though God and angel
should merely stand and digress...

I should slow my tongue here,
I should make ends my jostling verbs,
but all of heaven and earth
cry out for action.

Yet all we seem to have are words.

Words.
